Robert Hughes 1938-2012 Critic and Historian

Some of his writings on the works of artists:

Cezanne - "An artist who takes you backstage; there are the ropes and pulleys, the wooden back of the Magic Mountain"
Rothko's Chapel - "An inward convulsion of pessimism"
Picasso's cubism - "a twitching skin of nuances"
Caravaggio's youths - "overripe, peachy bits of rough trade, with yearning mouths and hair like black icecream"

Taken from Rachel Spence's obituary in the Financial Times, August 11th/12th, 2012
